I don't think we want to "roll out our own" solution, as it creates additional layers of dependencies and complexities.Īpple's Profile Manager in Server.app can be used to manage various settings on Macs, however the other requirements you list are not well served by Apple's software.

They came down to a more reasonable price increase of only $10k after discussions of future plans, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Love JAMF but their initial pricing this year was $60k more than last year, so I had to look elsewhere. We just made the switch to Mosyle since they are far more EDU focused and have some features our teachers have been asking for for quite a while. Had we stuck with JAMF we would've added a few more DP's this year. Each site had a primary with a backup, along with caching servers for each site. We had 4 internal DP's for packages, all AFP shares. We had our DMZ host as our external DP for installs and never ran into any complaints across all of our macs, about 10,000 devices. We just started waiting a few days to find out if there were any major bugs. Support is usually able to help pretty quickly if there are issues though.

We came across an upgrade issue a few times. Updating both of the instances was pretty straightforward, unless there is some QoS issue with the install. One internal instance, one in a DMZ, and one for the database.

Ran on prem with 3 Windows VM's, about 16,000+ devices. We also had a JDS at every physical location to minimize WAN traffic. Oh, and the normal pains of adding SSL certs to Tomcat under Linux, which can be fun. Only ever had to manually manage the SQL DB once when a policy started running at every check-in on every device and we had to drop the affected tables.

Maintenance was minimal - update the core OS when needed for security reasons (kernel updates, SSH server updates mostly), upgrade the JSS software package itself when releases came out. We hosted our JSS on a single Ubuntu 14.04LTS server for approximately 300-400 MacOS & iOS devices.
